Earth System (2500203) – Course 2025/26 PDF

Activities

Seven two-hour problem-solving sessions on mass and/or energy flow and recognition of landforms. The final resolution of the problems can be completed at home and in a group. The solution of the problems of each session must be delivered a week later in Atenea. Session 1: Global energy balance on Earth. Session 2: The atmosphere and its interaction with the ocean. Session 3: Stationary mass balance: mass balance in the ocean. Session 4: Hydrological balance in river basins. Session 5: 3D recognition of landforms I: glacial, slope and torrential landforms. Session 6: 3D recognition of landforms II: fluvial and coastal landforms. Session 7. Non-stationary mass balance: the carbon cycle. The resolution of the problems is carried out in specific workshops of 0.5 h per each session of problems (3,5 h in total).

The activity consists of carrying out a group work on a particular topic of a terrestrial subsystem, or of a body of the Solar System, to choose from a list. Working groups will be formed in teams of 4 people or, exceptionally 3. As a guide for the work, there will be two tutoring sessions, one shortly after the start of the course and another one month before the deadline for submission. Of course, private consultations can also be carried out outside the classroom at an agreed time. The delivery of the work will be an oral presentation lasting 10 - 15 minutes (depending on the total number of groups) which will be followed by a round of questions of about 5 minutes. Presentation and defense will be evaluated. The pdf of the presentation must be delivered to Atenea in advance of the sessions. The oral presentations of the works will be made in three sessions of two hours each. The attendance of all the members of the group to the session of presentation of his work is compulsory, since it is part of the activities of training in transversal competitions of the asignatura. Attendance at all presentations is highly recommended.
